OUR STORY

A lifetime of personal and professional experiences spurred longtime friends, Angela Walker Campbell and Arlene Stewart to establish Sound Bodies for Life and the Food Discovery Fun Labs™. As a child cooking with her grandmother in her native Trinidad, Arlene learned that food is medicine. These childhood lessons with Trinidad's bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables helped to shape a culinary philosophy that has informed Arlene's career as a chef and nutritional healer. Arlene longed for a way to help communities live nutritionally healthier lives.

When Angela’s son was 2 years-old, he was diagnosed with asthma. Dismayed with the regimen of nebulizers and steroids he was prescribed and refusing to accept the diagnosis, she and her husband searched for causes and alternative treatments. Finally, an integrative holistic physician suggested a change in diet that eliminated all of her son’s asthmatic symptoms. Angela couldn't help but wonder about the countless children who are routinely fated to a lifetime of unnecessary medications.

It seemed to Angela and Arlene that only people of means had access to meaningful information and activities for healthier living, and not those who need it most. As an advertising industry veteran, Angela understood the power of marketing communications to inform and persuade. She remembered how School House Rock taught a generation of children the preamble to the Constitution, principles of grammar, and much more. Why couldn’t a similar approach, enveloped in a proprietary STEAM curriculum, be employed to promote awareness and behavior change around healthy eating and fitness habits? Inspired by a shared belief that equitable access to information and services, and novel engagement, can help create healthier communities (and bolstered by years of data gathering) Angela and Arlene founded Sound Bodies for Life and the Food Discovery Fun Labs™.

For many years, Arlene has been a personal chef to several Hollywood luminaries. Since 2002, she has been the personal chef to an A-list celebrity household where she is responsible for the family’s daily meals, kitchen and food management, as well as the success of the family’s small and large scale entertaining.

Arlene developed a health-and- nutrition conscious menu for a New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC health food and juice bar chain. Throughout Arlene’s career, many have sought her advice on encouraging children to eat more healthily. She often draws from the experiences of cooking with her grandmother in her native Trinidad and its bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

In her role as the Executive Chef of the prestigious Léman Manhattan Preparatory School, Jenny created a pioneering program that focused on nutritious, balanced, and most importantly, flavorful cuisine for school-age children. In total, Jenny directed three programs and two full kitchens at Léman Prep, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily to over 700 students and 150 staff members. She was responsible for a labor, supply, and food budget exceeding $1M annually and for all purchasing. Supervising a staff of thirteen, she also executed all of the school’s events and functions, including cocktail parties, executive dinners, and 100+ luncheons.

Jenny is most proud of the week-long and semester-long afterschool and summer cooking programs that she conceived and launched for Léman. The programs served children in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade.

In 2012, Jenny published her first cookbook, Secret Sauce, Kid Tested and Approved Recipes from the Leman Manhattan Chef’s Vault.
